All diploma programs in Ondo State Polytechnic, Owo, are run on the UNIT COURSE basis, The Unit Course in prescribed section of teaching and study, each of which is separately examined/assessed.
To provide greater flexibility (through a wider variety of combinations of approved courses) in order to accommodate:
-
Varying students pre-entry backgrounds through the provision of special remedial courses or bridge courses.
-
Varying students’ interests and occupational objectives by means of allowing the selection of options in the advanced stages of a program of study as well as allowing the selection of electives within the ancillary courses.
Transfer from one school or type of program to another without “loss” or “penalty” (including transfer from part-time programs to full-time programs and vice versa.
To provide for full-time students’ progress by means of:
-
Individual progression at rates reasonably adjusted to individual abilities, as all students are not required to take the same number of courses at the same time.
-
Avoidance of package repetition of instructional components earlier assessed as passed in order to improve performance in the instructional components, earlier assessed as failed. Majority of the courses are to be self contained so as to have the specification of a minimum number of prerequisites in the instructional program structure, (more than a third of the first year work of a two-year program should be prerequisites for the second year work).
-
To provide consistency in work loads by enabling more precise specification of different required components (i.e Core courses ancillary courses) of various instructional programs.
To provide for inter-departmental and inter-disciplinary collaboration in curriculum planning, formulation and continual review which also minimizes duplication. To facilitate the introduction of new instructional programs without necessarily creating new departments.
